Continued Coverage for Dependents
Your covered spouse and dependents may purchase continued coverage under the
School District's plans for 36 months, if they lose coverage as a result of
your:
- Death,
- Divorce or legal separation,
- Entitlement to Medicare, or
- Dependent child ceasing to be a dependent as defined by the plan.
If you become entitled to Medicare while you are an active associate and you
later experience a qualifying event (e.g., terminate your employment), your
dependents may be eligible for continued coverage until the later of:
- 36 months from the date you first became covered by Medicare, or
- The maximum coverage period for the qualifying event (18 months in the case
of termination of employment).
Separate Elections
You and your covered spouse and dependents can elect COBRA coverage independently.
For example, a spouse or dependent child may elect continuation coverage even
if you do not elect continuation coverage.
Newborn and Adopted Children
If you give birth or adopt a child while you are on COBRA continuation coverage,
you may enroll your new child for COBRA coverage immediately. Your newborn or
adopted child will be a "qualified beneficiary." This means that the
child will have independent election rights and multiple qualifying event rights.
