The State's Blood Bank Program

The Blood Bank of Delaware/Eastern Shore is a non-profit organization that provides more than 100,000 units of blood each year to the hospitals in Delaware and the Eastern Shore of Maryland.

Why should you join the Blood Bank?
Your Blood Bank membership covers you, your spouse and dependents for any amount of blood needed. This means that if you or your family ever need blood transfusions, no matter how many, you'll be covered. For example, if you needed 50 pints of blood after a car accident, the blood replacement bill would come to over $1,500. If you are not a Blood Bank member, you will have to pay the fee, or find 50 blood donors to replace what you used.

They'll ask you to 'provide' a pint of blood about once every 18-24 months, which you can do in one of three ways:

1. give the blood yourself;
2. have a friend or loved one give for you;
3. pay $30, the cost of one pint of blood in our area.

Remember: You DO NOT have to give blood to join and receive the benefits of coverage! You can choose one of these other options.
